Every year, during the month of June, the LGBT+ community celebrates in a number of different ways. Across the globe, various events are held during this special month as a way of recognising the influence LGBT+ people have had around the world. Across the UK throughout June and the rest of summer there are 151 registered pride events taking place! This year is going to be bigger than ever as it marks 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK, and 3 years since the UK voted to legalise same-sex marriage, giving same-sex couples the same legal rights as straight ones. Some events include LGBT+ pride parades and marches, rallies, commemorations, community days, dance parties, and large festivals.
During Pride Month, it is not uncommon to see the rainbow flag being proudly displayed as a symbol for the LGBT rights movement. The rainbow flag was first designed in 1978, by the artist Gilbert Baker. He saw the rainbow as a natural flag from the sky, so he adopted eight colours for the stripes, each colour with its own meaning (hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit). Since then the flag has been modified to 6 colours.
